The Wisdom of Virgil Abloh

When Louis Vuitton men’s artistic director and Off-White founder Virgil Abloh died on Sunday, following a private fight with cancer, the world lost a fashion visionary and also a beautiful, wise soul. Here, to celebrate his life, we share some of his astute and inspirational words.

“I make things and leave defining what that is to someone else.”

“The world produces waves. Surf or drown. You decide.”

“Life is so short you can’t waste even a day subscribing to what someone thinks you can do versus knowing what you can do.”

“I want to speak to the generation presiding. But I also want a young generation to come in and know, hey, there’s someone here who’s listening and speaking back to them.”

“All I’m trying to do is create things that are indicative of my surroundings and the community that I come from, so that more people can do them.”

“When creativity melds together with global issues, I believe you can bring the world together.”

“I’m not really into style. I’m more into confidence or having something to say.”

“Art is made in hindsight “

“I don’t come up with ideas in a test tube; I come up with ideas by breaking test tubes. That’s how I’ve always been.”

“I’m fascinated by the idea that a human connection can be triggered through inanimate devices.”

“My motivation is, in part, a bit of angst that comes from feeling like I don’t belong, that our generation doesn’t belong.”

“If you look at why people become wack as they get older, it’s because they stop doing the things they did that were formative to their work. You can’t mentally stay still. You can’t not challenge yourself.”

“My style is to never say no.”
